Does Public Works condone folks climbing 20 feet up trees? Does the City of Sebastopol have workers comp/liability if someone toiling to drape a tree in an art instalation falls whilst climbing to install an aproved installation? Do Artists have to show workers comp with the State of California as required by State Law?
What a shame this happened. It does make me wonder - I had thought that public art had to go through the Public Art Committee to have an approval, I didn't realize that Public Works alone could ok an installation in a public space. It might be helpful to have a small temporary plaque as a way of having an ID for the piece, and that it was approved. I had seen this fabric art in place before it was removed, and had wondered of its origin.
Aww that makes me sad. I made a small fabric collage scene and it graced a trail in town for almost a year until someone decided to set it on fire. People are weird.

My two guesses as to what happened:
1) Nature purist would view person-made objects placed on a tree as graffiti.
2) Homeless population living along the trail.
