The district, as most school districts in the state, are required to make cuts by March 15th to account for estimated enrollment and a tentative budget. I applaud the administration and board for making cuts that affect the students the least. It is rare for school districts to cut administrative positions but this one did. So the budget is not being balanced on the backs of the teachers and those that affect the students the most. Teacher positions are based on enrollment. More students equal more teachers. Unfortunately, small class sizes are not supported by the state budget.
Thank you for writing about the WSCUHSD structural deficit, this one time at least. It's a very serious long standing problem that needs to be understood and addressed. The responsibility lies with the Board, or Trustees as they call themselves. We, the taxpayers, have been seriously misled by media coverage that preferred not to address this fundamental issue that shapes the fiscal profile and possibilities for educational opportunities for our students. All the recent major decisions, including the closure of El Molino HS, have been influenced by if not shaped by the District's structural deficit. Everyone needs to know and understand -- it's not the job of the media to collide with the District in hiding the truth from the community and taxpayers. Education, like democracy, dies in darkness, one might say.
Thank you for this comprehensive review of a very complex situation. If only our culture would make education a top priority, if only it would put money here instead of lots of other places I could name, then the world could be changed. As it is, these ridiculous budget cuts continue and everyone loses.
Excellent reporting, a vital contribution to the community.
