I can't help wondering why there is even one assault weapon in the store? How would the owners feel if that were used in a West County mass shooting? Hunting weapons? Okay. Assault weapons? I see no need for them.
But notice the poster at check out with an image of a man in full military garb, headline reading “military and first responders.” I guess it’s attractive to all of those local militia members who want to do a little cosplaying.
Yes, disappointing to see this gun shop here. And to learn that Petaluma’s gun shop is so near also … where anyone in Graton can easily drive there. I fear (more) for our local gatherings, as rude vehicles already race by- Which in itself is dangerous.
I don’t eat killed animals anymore- Mostly because of cruelty and depletion of animals and even entire species.
Though, while growing up in Mendocino county in the 60’s and 70’s, I ate many animals- After hunting, trapping, skinning and plucking: geese, ducks, quail, wild pig, deer, rabbits, pheasant, even one big rattle snake. I had older brothers, male cousins … and with my dad and uncle we did it all. Also shooting skeet and cans off of hay bails for practice.
The family also ate ‘lots of abalone (when you could get 5 at a time), various fish, muscles, sea urchin, eel from the R. River at midnight by the dam and frogs from a swamp at night. I also made little hand-bags and head bands from the squirrel and rabbits fur. That’s what a granddaughter of a taxidermist does.
But it’s a different world now, and even abalone can’t be harvested today. We all need to conserve the land and water spaces that all animals need, and give protection to species we have over killed.
It’s a different world now. Act accordingly.
For sure we don’t need any more guns in the world (look at the stats) and particularly any assault riffle. Yet WE do now?
So sorry to learn of this! Shipping guns not legal in CA to other states? What is our world coming to when we feel violence is so necessary? I thought west county was different!
Maybe he thinks there may be a market for guns with the liberal community to counter the right wing nationalists who speak of civil war. After all, weapon sellers don’t usually care about who is buying their products, or why, no matter whether they are individuals or governments. They are selling guns for profit and no other reason.
I hope we don’t devolve further than we have already. Violence begets more violence. People like this guy who say guns are bought by people only for hunting, or for “collections”, are deluded. Guns are for violence.
I was shocked and heartbroken to read about the gun shop in Graton. From what I read, guns in the house don't make people safer, but rather less safe. We are such a violent culture and bringing more guns to people is not the kind of world I envision or that I find inspiring. I understand the fun in target shooting, but considering a weapon for protection, which means, being willing to shoot another person, breaks my heart. Having this store here makes me feel less safe. I hope I am wrong!

Hebel said we were wrong about the "assault weapon" and we are in the middle of correcting that.

The article minimizes the assault weapon

I also hate guns but I am still glad that sport shooters and others have a family owned place to obtain firearms.
Nina in Sebastopol-
