PART 2: Despite the district's long-running commitment to racial equality, parental outcry over incidents of racist name-calling has been a wake-up call
Thank you for the article. Great reporting as always.
I support the community efforts for improvement and Sara Graham and the school district’s efforts to date and going forward. Both of my son’s (one with developmental challenges/delays) went through Parkside and one through Brookhaven and now Analy.
Running a school (and a school district) is incredibly challenging and complex and while there is always room for improvement I think they have done incredibly well.
I feel sad and embarrassed that anyone’s child has experienced the nasty behavior described, let alone the child of Dr. Harris who has contributed to so greatly enhancing the practice of pediatrics in America. She took a constructive and healing approach to encountering the situation. Instead of suing the district or withdrawing her child from the school she made a donation to help the district do better in addressing the issues of racism and bullying and the need for developing emotional intelligence. I hope all our kids will benefit from her generous donation and become more skilled in coping with this behavior.
To the Burke Harris family, it’s unfortunate and rude that your generous gift was not acknowledged when you gave it. The article helps me to understand that SEF needs to create policy for “directed donations “. That’s understandable. But this donation is in alignment with the school’s goals and to take 2 years to simply acknowledge and appreciate it is such a shame and I hope that an effort has been made to mend hurt feelings. The wheels of change are slow. Keep this topic in the news and keep pushing. Even if your son moves on, your efforts will benefit other children and your child will learn from your actions.
Very informative, thank you. It also feels like so much of the story runs between the written lines. Particularly regarding the broader older generation demographics vs. the younger school age demographics. David Foster Wallace might have pointed out that those are very different waters.
