Roundup: And the livin' is easy
Goatlandia Kitchen, the Sebastopol sinkhole, police logs and more
Goatlandia Kitchen opens up on the edge of the Barlow
Deborah Blum founded Goatlandia, a farm animal sanctuary, on the outskirts of Sebastopol 10 years ago—and now, to support that enterprise, she’s opened Goatlandia Kitchen on Laguna Parkway, just across from the Sebastopol Police Station and next door to Patisserie Angelica. They had their grand opening Saturday evening.
“I started rescuing right after I started to make the transition to eating plant-based,” Blum said. “I’ve owned restaurants off and on for 30 years, so I love food. I love hospitality. So I started doing catering as a way to generate revenue for our rescue work, and people loved our food.”
“I was cooking out in my house for a number of years, which isn’t very practical. So we decided, time to get a real kitchen. We got this kitchen”—formerly the home of Smokehouse BBQ—“about a year and a half ago, and then I just decided, heck, you know, everybody wants a great restaurant. Let’s open a restaurant.”
“We are all plant-based, and we use almost entirely organic ingredients. So whenever we can get something organic we do. We’re very happy to be buying from Feed Sonoma, which is a local co-op of small farmers. So we love cooking with things that are organic and in season and local.”
All the proceeds from Goatlandia Kitchen go to the sanctuary to support their work.
On Friday, the Chamber of Commerce had a ribbon cutting at Goatlandia Kitchen. The restaurant provided strawberry lemonade—perfect for the sweltering day—and plate after plate of amazing appetizers. Some special guests—two legged and four-legged—joined in the fun.
The Sebastopol Sinkhole
The Public Works Department, with the help of outside contractors, worked to repair a sink hole on one of Sebastopol’s main thoroughfares this week. The sinkhole, at the intersection of Bodega Avenue and Dutton Avenue, was small in circumference but deep—maybe 12 feet—according to one resident who happened upon it while out for a walk. More restoration work on the sinkhole is scheduled for this upcoming week.

Week of July 8-13
You continue to amaze us!
We shot right past our June goal of 800 paid subscribers and are now on the way to 830! Every paid subscription moves our “experiment in local journalism” closer to our ultimate goal of being self-sustaining. At this point, we are self-sustaining for one reporter (co-founder/editor/reporter Laura Hagar Rush) and one part-time contributor (Mark Fernquest). But if you’ve been enjoying the work of our new fulltime reporter, Ezra Wallach, a 23-year-old go-getter who’s got a big career ahead of him—please consider becoming a paid subscriber. Nurturing young reporters is what small local papers do. We get the benefit of their youth and energy—and in Ezra’s case, his amazing nose for news—and they get paid to learn the job of being a reporter. It’s a win-win situation—and one worthy of your support. Become a paid subscriber today!
