Roundup: Bottling springtime
Garden art, jam of the month, fun and games and the weekly police logs
After I finish an article, I always take a break before starting another one. This week, instead of getting a coffee and cookie (my usual vice), I wandered around the neighborhood near the office taking pictures of people’s gardens, which is how I came upon this delightful piece of garden art on South High Street. It’s a bottle tree—something I’d only read about in novels, but never seen. The practice originated in the Congo and was brought to the American South by enslaved people from that region. According to bottle tree tradition, blue bottles in particular are thought to ward off evil. —Laura Hagar Rush
Speaking of bottling the season…
Society Bakery and Cafe just south of town has started a new Jam of the Month Club. Look for flavors like Apricot Lavender; Habanero Peach Jam; Rose Petal Jam, and much more. Club members get two jars of small-batch jams per month. Find out more.
The Boys (and Girls) of Summer
The Sebastopol Coed Softball League is looking for a few more teams to join them down at Ives Park starting in July. “Friday nights could use two more teams and Wednesday night needs one more. This league has been around for over 50 years and is super family-friendly,” writes Yolanda Guerinoni. “If you’re interested in joining us for some fun and friendly competition, contact Yolanda on Facebook or email SebastopolCoedSB@gmail.com.”
Sewing up a storm
Got some sewing you’ve been putting off—a rip in a favorite shirt or some socks that need darning. Maybe you just need a little company to get that project done. The old-fashioned sewing circle is back in Sebastopol:
“Mend and Befriend” at the Sebastopol Grange: Thursday, June 13, 4:30-6:30 pm. “Bring your mending or craft project and make new fix-it friends as you work! Invite your friends and neighbors to join us! Bring something for a clothing swap if you’d like.”
“Sewing in Community” at the Sebastopol Library: Wednesdays from 6-7:30 pm.
“We have sewing machines for you to use as well as volunteers to assist and support you in your endeavors. You can bring your own project to work on, or we can provide you with a project. Each month, our sewing instructor will introduce a new project. We can't wait to sew in community with you!”
Going to the river this summer? Parking fees are going up, but there’s a cool shuttle
From Supervisor Lynda Hopkins’ District 5 newsletter
From July 1 to Labor Day, day use parking fees will increase from $7 to $10 in a handful of locations that have high tourist traffic during peak season: Steelhead Beach River Park, Sunset Beach River Park, Guerneville River Park, Riverfront Regional Park, Del Rio Woods, Healdsburg Veterans Memorial Beach, and Cloverdale River Park. For the rest of the year, the general parking fee of $7 will remain the same.
Regional Parks did not increase fees to the annual parks passes, only the daily parking fee. Don’t have an annual pass? Renew or buy a pass online.
The low-cost Russian River shuttle service is also a great option. The shuttle costs $5 per person per day (children aged 0-18 ride free) and travels a loop, departing every 30 minutes between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from El Molino High School, 7050 Covey Road, in Forestville to Steelhead Beach Regional Park and Sunset Beach River Park. National Peace Officers Memorial Day
This past week was National Police Week, a time where law enforcement pays respects to those who have been killed in the line of duty while protecting the community.
May 15 was specifically National Peace Officers Memorial Day, which the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department marked with a memorial service outside of their main office.
“Since 1850, we have lost 10 peace officers in the line of duty,” a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Department reads. “Their names are etched in stone in front of the Main Office with the phrase ‘So We May Never Forget.’ We recognize their sacrifice and the families who miss them dearly.”
Sebastopol Police Chief Ron Nelson accepted a certificate honoring National Police Week and spoke briefly about it at the last council meeting.
“We are very, very fortunate to have a police department in our town that I think is a standard bearer for what policing should look like. It's a little poignant getting this because this occasion is always to remember the fallen officers, and it's been a rough month. We've lost 25 officers in the last four weeks nationwide. But we are grateful for this recognition, and we're proud to serve our community.”
