Roundup: Still with the apples
Winners of the Gravenstein Apple Pie Baking contest (and recipes), free apples from Laura, and a double dose of police logs
This year’s best Gravenstein apple pie recipes
The sweet scent of freshly baked apple pies filled the air last weekend as the 2024 Gravenstein Apple Fair crowned the winners of its highly anticipated Apple Pie Baking Contest. There were 26 entries in total (6 youth entries and 14 adult entries), all of whom used Sonoma County-grown Gravenstein apples to create their delectable pies.
Winners in the Youth Category:
1st Place: Poppy Laidlaw with her delightful “Poppy's Spiced Apple Pie”
2nd Place: Emmett Kirby
3rd Place: Jack Kiesel
Poppy Laidlaw, this year’s youth champion, wowed the judges with her expertly crafted pie featuring a spiced apple filling encased in a buttery, flaky crust. Her careful selection of spices, combined with her skillful execution, earned her the top spot in the youth division.
Winners in the Adult Category:
1st Place: Susan Sheehan with her heavenly “Susan's Salted Caramel Apple Pie”
2nd Place: Elizabeth Fried
3rd Place: Adam Persinger
In the adult category, Susan Sheehan captured the judges’ hearts with her luscious salted caramel apple pie, a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. Her use of a homemade salted caramel sauce, paired with the tartness of Gravenstein apples, set her pie apart from the competition.
The winners were awarded a bag full of surprises from Sebastopol Hardware, a fair sponsor.
The judges, including James Beard Award-winner Clark Wolf and local baking legends, were impressed by the creativity and craftsmanship displayed by all participants.
“Each pie was a celebration of the Gravenstein apple, and the dedication and passion these bakers put into their creations were truly inspiring,” said Carmen Snyder, executive director of Sonoma County Farm Trails.
