RoundUp: Traffic and other tiny dramas
The parade, a Japanese delegation learns about homeschooling, tiny gardens and more
In the parade’s wake…
At the parade, Richard Schoellhorn photographed this young woman carrying a child and pulling a cart and cleaning up after the horses in the Apple Blossom parade. “This is true dedication, carrying a baby and picking up horse poop!” he wrote.
Oopsie Doopsie…
Sebastopol resident Michael Wilson snapped this photo on Thursday. “Nothing like turning down a one-way street in Sebastopol…right in front of Officer Paige Thomas, one of Sebastopol's fantastic police officers,” Wilson wrote on Nextdoor. “Lucky for the gentleman behind the wheel, he was let off with a warning...Pay attention while driving, folks. It’s only your life, and other people’s lives on the line.” And FYI Michael Wilson is also the guy who caught the piglet-on-loose last June. Some people are always in the right place at the right time!
Takeo City Japan Delegation Visits Orchard View School
On Friday, April 25, a delegation from Sebastopol’s Sister City of Takeo City, Japan, visited Orchard View School while they were in town for the Apple Blossom Parade.
The four members of the delegation were: Tadashi Komatsu (Mayor of Takeo City), Hiroko Kishimoto (Lifelong Learning Section ), Tsurumaki Kazutoshi (City Hall Section Chief) and Satomi Yoshikawa (Assembly Chair).
Teacher Tim Forsland and Meg Mizutani, Board Member of Sebastopol World Friends, met with them. “The group wanted to learn more about Orchard View and its alternative model of education in the county,” wrote Forsland. “They said that in cities throughout Japan students are unhappy with the traditional model of high school education.” Principal Maura DuVall gave them the background on the school, which is in its 25th year.
“We explained that Orchard View has a smaller environment, where students have a greater say in their education and what they study,” said Forsland. “Each student has a supervising teacher who meets with them on a weekly basis for curricular support and academic counseling.” Orchard View High School students come to campus three days while K-7 students come twice a week; students work independently on off days; some work at job and/or take classes at SRJC.
The group also asked questions relating to student well-being, teacher morale, collaboration among teachers, curriculum, and the benefits of a safe, small school atmosphere.
Honey, who shrunk the garden?
Sebastopol-based landscape designer Tim Dunnigan of Gardens by Tim has built full-sized gardens all over the United States, but now he’s thinking small. He’s building these miniature gardens, based on your favorite famous painting. Below is his interpretation of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. The base features an image of the painting and a built-in watering system to keep your garden looking great. You can find him on Facebook.
