The Basket: A whale, a vote for the trio, and unanswered questions
Big news from SebARTS, a letter to the editor, and a clarification
A Whale of a Story at Sebastopol Center for the Arts
Jos Sances' massive art piece, "Or the Whale," a 51-foot illustration of a whale that doubles as a critique of American capitalism, will be on display in the auditorium of Sebastopol Center of the Arts until the end of the year.
It won't be the only big fish leaving SebARTS. (I know, I know, it's a mammal.) Sebastopol Center for the Arts will soon be looking for new leadership. Co-directors Catherine Devriese and Una Glass are both leaving the organization. Glass finished her tenure this week, while Devriese is leaving at the end of the year.
Letter to the Editor
A Vote for the Trio
Dear Editor,
Please encourage your readers to vote for Jill McLewis, Oliver Dick and Dennis Colthurst. They are outstanding citizens and actively involved in our community. Jill has been involved in the Community Cultural Center, the Chamber of Commerce, the Sebastopol Downtown Association and owns a chocolate business downtown. The Press Democrat recently ran a story on her.
Jill and Oliver have regularly attended council meetings for the last two years and were opposition voices when Diana Rich and Patrick Slayter tried to force a consolidation of our fire department.
Dennis Colthurst was a public servant for decades, serving in law enforcement and many nonprofits. Many Sebastopol residents know Dennis from his time as a police officer in Sebastopol.
If your readers are unfamiliar with these candidates, please direct them to this profile by the Press Democrat, the League of Women Voters forum and their individual websites:
Jill McLewis: https://www.jill4sebastopol.com/home
Oliver Dick: https://www.oliver4sebastopol.com
Dennis Colthurst: https://dennisforsebastopol.com
People should be sure to vote for three candidates in the upcoming election because there are three open seats. Each council seat is valuable and part of our democratic process. It is insulting to the people of Sebastopol and to the council to say that voters should not cast their votes for three people when we have three open seats.
Thank you for your work on covering our election.
Best,
Kate Haug

From the Comments Section
"Thanks for your community news. It is really nice to read about our neighbors and events." - Marilyn Dolce Davis, in response to "The Basket: Good Times, Sad News and Hot Sand"
"Thanks for the recap, Laura. Very helpful for those of us who don't attend [city council]. And special thanks to Councilmember Rich for her focused commitment to addressing the homelessness issues. Not an easy task." - Steve Einstein, in response to a city council recap in October
Clarification
In our story about former mayor Ken Foley's attempts to get answers to his questions from various candidates, we reported that several candidates never wrote him back. It turned out that both Oliver Dick and Jill McLewis responded to him - they sent us the emails. Though they never answered his questions, both offered to meet with him while they were campaigning in his neighborhood. He wrote Jill back to set up a time but he said she has yet to reply. In response to our article, candidate Stephen Zollman offered to get together with Foley and talk with him as well.
