Sebastopol Walks: Climate Victory Gardens
Saturday, July 27, 9 am. Meet at the Seed Garden at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 500 Robinson Road, Sebastopol. (Park in the St. Stephen’s parking lot toward the street.) Free.
During the victory garden movement of World Wars I and II, Americans planted gardens to feed and support both their local communities and troops overseas. These efforts were wildly successful. By 1944, nearly 20 million victory gardens produced 8 million tons of food—around 40 percent of the fresh fruits and vegetables consumed in the U.S. at the time. This incredible show of grassroots organizing and community efforts are the inspiration for today’s Climate Victory Garden movement. For this walk, we’ll start at Sebastopol’s Community Seed Exchange at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church, then explore nearby neighborhood Front Yard Food Gardens. There are many benefits to growing food in our own gardens. By gardening using regenerative practices we can sequester carbon, helping to reduce climate change impacts, and be part of a larger effort. The walk will be approximately 2 miles. (Note that this walk does NOT start in the downtown plaza.)
