Suzume: Japanese Animation at the Rialto
Monday, April 17 to Thursday, April 20, various times, at the Rialto Cinemas, 6868 McKinley Street, Sebastopol.
Fans of Japanese animation will be interested in the new film, Suzume, a coming-of-age story set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where the protagonist must close the doors causing the devastation. Learn more.

Understanding Bird Songs: Online program with David Lukas

In part three of a four-part series of talks on bird biology, naturalist David Lukas will introduce us to the joyful world of bird song. In this talk we will explore how and why birds sing, and how we study bird songs as a way of trying to understand what birds are saying to each other. Register now. Friends of the Hidden Forest Earth Day Fundraiser
Saturday, April 22, 2 to 6 pm, at Hessel Grange, 5400 Blank Road, Sebastopol. $45.
Join Friends of the Hidden Forest for an Earth Day Fundraiser with food, wine, music and more. There will be a bountiful grazing board of appetizers, along with a selection of non-alcoholic elixirs and soft drinks; acoustic blues, country, and rock ‘n roll music will be provided by The Doc Kraft Band. There will be educational displays, a community seed swap (bring your seeds in labeled packets), a plant sale, activities for kids, a slide show of The Hidden Forest, as well as a raffle and a silent auction of locally sourced items and services. Earth Day at Luther Burbank Farm

The Luther Burbank Experiment Farm in Sebastopol is celebrating Earth Day 2023 with free activities. This family-friendly event will feature docent-led walks through the historic garden and farmstead; scavenger hunts with prizes; a tree planting demonstration; nursery and plant sales; local artist-made carnival photo stand; and many many photo opportunities. The nursery sales will include rare Burbank plants, and there will be a tree planting demonstration by our farm curator, Jamie Self. The garden will be in bloom, and the sun will hopefully be shining as we celebrate and help protect our Earth together. Learn more.
Asanas Outside Yoga: Ragle Ranch

Breathe in the fresh air as you move through meditation exercises (dhyana) and posture sequences (asanas) through breath work (pranayama). At Ragle, a great grandmother oak welcomes us to join her in branching out and connecting to the land. The class is designed for every body and all levels to come participate and enjoy the stress-relieving benefits of being outdoors and the strength-building, yet grounding, benefits of yoga. Enjoy a conversation with Benjamin Clark, Maia Kobabe and our E.D. Andrew Mecum about the relationship of printing, comics and beyond. Benjamin is the curator for the Schulz Museum. Maia was a member of NBLA, and created some beautiful books and prints while here. She went on to get a MFA degree in Comics, and not long after released a graphic novel, Gender Queer, which has been atop the list of banned books over the last few years. Get tickets.

Earth Day Art Walk: Gallery and Garden

Happy Earth Day! Enjoy our current exhibit, "A Laguna Field Guide" by Christopher Reiger, then walk around the native plant demonstration garden. Sister City Friendship Celebration – Where Sushi Meets Borsch Outdoors
Sun, April 23, 3 to 6 pm at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 500 Robinson Road, Sebastopol. $25.
After a three-year break, Sebastopol World Friends is excited to bring this popular event back to the community— an annual tradition where friends and supporters can gather and celebrate our community, our sister cities and their cultures, and our work for world peace. We will showcase food from Ukraine and Japan, where Sebastopol has our two sister cities: Takeo, Japan, and Chyhyryn, Ukraine. Also featured will be cultural entertainment by Zoloti Maky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and a local Japanese taiko drumming group Tenten Taiko. The highlight of this year’s event is to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our sister city relationship with Chyhyryn, Ukraine. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Suggested donation amounts are $25 for adults and $15 for children and seniors. Get tickets.
PEEK INTO NEXT WEEK: The Apple Blossom Parade & Festival are happening the weekend after next. This year’s theme is “Sonoma County Blossoms - Celebrate Sonoma County," and the event is sure to be filled with great food and entertainment for the whole family. Parade starts at 10 am on Saturday morning, April 29, at Analy High School and runs down Main Street, and the Festival will continue through Sunday, April 30.
