Richard Retecki was one of handful of environmental planners and advocates that preserved the Sonoma County we know and love today. They were thought to be "a little bit looney" at the time.
What a great piece. We who have loved the relatively unspoiled beauty of this county since those heady days remain so grateful for this small cohort of hard working idealists and merry pranksters. Good to be reminded of what it took.
What a great story! I didn't know about Richard Retecki and his many contributions to the gorgeous open space and vital public access that we now take for granted in Sonoma County. Many thanks to Retecki and for this article!
I love learning about these heroes who live among us. Thank you to the Sebastopol Times for enlightening us and to Richard Retecki for his lifetime of contributions to making this wonderful place continue to be the treasure that it is.
Thank you for this fabulous pair of articles! It's so important to have honored here, and to learn about these amazing folks who worked so tirelessly to protect our country's precious land and resources. My own parents did similar work back in Connecticut, while I grew up, so I have a deep appreciation for the efforts of Richard Retecki, Ernie Carpenter, Eric Koenigshofer and others who have been so key in making our County so distinct and precious, in how it fought off development. The fight needs to continue, with the next General Plan!
Wonderful article! I’m so happy to hear about the history of preserving the beauty of Sonoma County. The regional parks are the Crown jewels of our County. What a hero!
Thanks for a wonderful and inspiring profile, Rollie.
