Roundup: That's wild!
A wildflower revival, Sebastopoll results, news about the July 3rd celebration, police logs and more
The wild triumph of Sebastopol Meadowfoam
Here’s some great environmental news (how often do you hear those words?): The Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation posted the gorgeous photo above on its Facebook page, with this explanatory note:
“This spring, our field crew made an incredible discovery at one of our vernal pool restoration sites. The endangered Sebastopol Meadowfoam, which was once struggling with just 50 plants in 2017, has exploded in numbers—over 10,000 times— with our estimates now soaring over 500,000 plants! What’s truly remarkable is that almost all of these plants are descendants of the seeds we carefully collected, nurtured in our nursery, and planted back in the fall of 2019. We’re seeing similar success in our efforts to boost populations of other endangered species like the Burke’s Goldfields and Sonoma Sunshine.”
The results of this week’s Sebastopoll…
Well, that was a presidential debate no one will forget anytime soon. As of Sunday morning at 8 am…
62% of respondents felt the Democrats should replace Joe Biden with another nominee. (According to party rules, they can’t do that unless he steps aside voluntarily.)
33% of respondents wanted to keep Joe Biden as the nominee.
The remaining 6% were split evenly between “None of the above” and “I’m for Trump.”
All told, 423 people responded to this poll, and 47 people shared their comments, most in the comment section, a few by email. To read the comments of your fellow Sebastopudlians, go here and scroll down to the comment section at the end of the article.
Speaking of patriotism, what’s up with the 3rd of July Fireworks at Analy?
The Kiwanis Club of Sebastopol’s 3rd of July Fireworks & Music Extravaganza gathers thousands of families at Analy High School’s athletic field every year for an evening of community celebration and patriotic splendor.
As usual, Kiwanis is going all out. There will be live music from School of Rock, The Soul Section, Mr. Music (Jim Corbett), and DJ ChrisW, as well as an expanded dance area. Look for more food vendors (14 of them!) and an expanded Kids Corner. There will even be a rock-climbing wall, plus raffle prizes, a flag ceremony and, of course, an awe-inspiring fireworks show.
The 3rd of July event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Kiwanis Club of Sebastopol, and 100% of the proceeds support grants, scholarships and service projects for local youth.
“We are thrilled to bring together the community once again for this beloved tradition,” said Craig Litwin, president of the Kiwanis Club of Sebastopol. “This event not only celebrates our patriotism but also supports our mission to serve the children of the world through our various programs and projects.”
Early gates open at 4 pm; the show starts at 5 pm at the Analy High School Football Field, 6950 Analy Ave., Sebastopol. Tickets are $20 for adults at the gate, $5 for ages 6-11, and kids 5 and under are free. Until midnight on June 30 (that’s tonight), you can purchase advance tickets for $17 online here.
And’s here’s something new: The Senior Center’s 3rd of July Parade in downtown
Everyone is invited to participate in this new event. Dress up in your best red, white and blue and join this fun walk around downtown. Departs from the senior center promptly at 10:30 am.
Tim Miller has resigned from West County Community Services
The Sebastopol Times has just learned that longtime West County Community Services (WCCS) director Tim Miller has resigned. Long considered one of the most effective advocates for the poor and homeless in West County, he will be missed.
“Tim Miller’s leadership at West County Community Services was truly inspired,” said former Sebastopol City Councilmember Una Glass, who is now Sebastopol’s representative to the Sonoma County Homeless Coalition. “His dedication transformed Park Village from a shrinking trailer park that was a financial burden to the city into a home for many low income and formally homeless members of our community—and he also developed new, critical revenue streams to support it.”
His replacement at WCCS is Christy Davila.
Congratulations to Analy teacher Heidi Mickelson
