RoundUp: The eye of the beholder
Art at the Source, a surprising cartooning talent, the Forestville parade and picnic, police logs and more
Art at the Source started yesterday, featuring 120 artists in Sonoma County—many in Sebastopol and west county. Art at the Source is a self-guided open studio tour presented by Sebastopol Center for the Arts. It is running this weekend and next weekend, 10 am to 5 pm, at art studios around the county.
Some local artists have been with Art at the Source for years, and going back and seeing their new work year after year is like discovering new dimensions of an old friend.
The Art at the Source website has a cool new Google Map feature to help you find artists near you. See it and examples of all the artists’ work here.
And every year there are new artists, like these:
Artist Couple - Maura Palmer and Jeremy Calnan - Studio 71: Maura is a sculptural ceramicist making hand-built garden totems and Jeremy is an abstract painter who describes his work as "spontaneous and intuitive", they use the artist name "Joyful Monk Art" and are located on Petaluma Avenue in the heart of town.
Kathy McKnight- abstract painter - Studio 95: Paintings that have vibrant, textured layers created with oil & cold wax. An invitation to pause, reflect, and connect with the Artist’s view of the natural world through the language of abstraction.
Wayne Anthony Rice - Abstractive Photography - Studio 70A: Contemporary, photographic art that explores the mysteries of abstraction. “Through standard and macro photography techniques, I take you on a flight of my imagination.”
Tara Belkin Harvey - Sculptural and Functional Ceramicist - Studio 101B: Ceramic sculpture and hand-built functional pottery. Earthy, organic, distressed pieces that evoke ancient ruins, weathered artifacts and natural phenomena.
From the Public Arts Committee to the drawing board
I ran into Marghe Mills-Thysen in Michael Carnacchi’s boot shop this week. Mills-Thysen was a member of the City of Sebastopol’s Public Arts Committee for more than 12 years, before she retired last July. Now that she’s no longer on the Arts Committee, she’s spending a lot of time in her garden—and at her drawing board. Her website spiralink.net features her cartoons, visual poems, and illustrations.
Forestville Youth Park Parade—the picnic continues today
The Forestville Youth Park Parade was yesterday, and the weekend-long picnic is still happening today. “Everyone is at the BBQ for a weekend of fun and music!” Vesta Copestakes wrote on her Facebook. “Come join us! This is the most important fundraiser for our privately owned and financed public youth park.”

Week of June 2-7
Why do people become paid subscribers to the Sebastopol Times when they can read it for free?
If you’re like me, you glance right over subscription pleas in the middle of articles. We’re trying to think of a way to keep you from doing that— after all, paid subscriptions are what make the Sebastopol Times possible. This week we decided to start putting quotes from our paid subscribers in each subscription blurb, explaining why they decided to become a paid subscriber. Their reasons are varied, interesting and sometimes funny (“My wife made me do it!”)
Claire Noble is a recent paid subscriber. Here is her reason: “You write really interesting and informative articles, affirming the best in our local community and keeping us informed of its resilience, charm and out-pouring of community events and celebrations. Thank you!”
When you become a paid subscriber, you are given an option to tell us why. We love reading your reasons. It makes us happy and gives us inspiration to keep going. We appreciate your financial support.
